A Brief History

Cleveland County is located in the southeastern region of Arkansas. It was originally established as Dorsey County in 1873, named after U.S. Senator Stephen W. Dorsey. After Dorsey was indicted for defrauding the post office, the county was renamed in 1885 after then-President Grover Cleveland.

The county features two incorporated cities, Rison and Kingsland, and several communities/townships. The county seat is in Rison.

Of the many features and attractions of the county, notable highlights include the birthplaces of country music icon Johnny Cash outside of Kingsland and legendary football coach Paul “Bear” Bryant, historic battlegrounds at Marks Mill and more.
